Eternal Helcaraxe – In Times Of Desperation Album Review

Cavan based Eternal Helcaraxe are set to return with their long awaited second full length album “In Times Of Desperation” on December 29th.  Comprising of eight blistering tracks of black metal that have been described as the bands strongest and most aggressive work to date. Combining the harsh sounds of earlier works with the emotive and mighty atmosphere of more recent years.

We received the press release for this album and I’ve been trying to write a review for two days now! Why? I keep putting the album on and listening through as a body of work completely lost in it all and forget I’m supposed to be reviewing it.

This is nothing short of a masterpiece! Definitely the best Black metal album I’ve heard all year. You know an album is good when you put it on and have to listen to it all the way through again with zero notion of skipping a track. Then again…

There’s so many layers to this album. It has your traditional Black metal sound and then goes all out Progressive Black metal with haunting Female vocals and atmosphere as ‘Bannow’ provides. We’ve linked that track along with all the previously released tracks in this review so you can check them out for yourself.

The title track ‘In Times Of Desperation’ is an 8:46 instrumental track with so many layers and dynamics. It’s honestly a good job I don’t ‘smoke’ anymore or I’d be unemployed as a result of this track. It’s a true musical epic!  Granted, it may not suit your traditional Black Metal fan but to my ears this is absolute nirvana!

When the album concludes with ‘One Journey’ all I can do is sit there just blown away! Then I start it all over again, which I have done now five times in a row trying to write this review.

2017 has been another amazing year for Irish metal and for this to be the last release of the year, what a send off! This truly is an absolute masterpiece and an album I just cannot stop listening to.

Best black metal album released this year! No doubt about it!

10/10

Hall Of Fame 2017 Dani Kansanaho

Hall Of Fame 2017 Dani Kansanaho

For our first induction into this years Hall Of Fame, we induct Mr Dani Kansanaho formerly of Belfast based Death metal band Shrouded. Which was very much his band so to speak. It was all a product of his creativity and imagination.  He was the mastermind behind the sound that they created, as well as the visual aspect of Shrouded.

This year aged just 23 he lost his battle with depression and sadly took his own life. In the same year he played Bloodstock Festival and released their acclaimed EP  ‘Ominous Divinity’

A true loss to the Irish metal scene as he was a uniquely talented young man.

Depression doesn’t care about your achievements, goals or dreams becoming a reality. It’s a truly terrible illness that also took Chris Cornell as an example this year.

We offer our deepest condolences to Dani’s family, friends and his brothers in Shrouded.

We do not want this man to be forgotten so we are inducting him  to our hall of fame. Where he shall remain remembered in the now and in the future.

Burning Metal Awards 2017: Best EP – Drakonis – The Great Miasma

Another award nobody cares about and another band receiving one of the least prestigious awards of the year! It’s not one they’ll be telling their grand kids about anyway! It’ll probably be joked about after a few beers at a gig some night…

This category like albums was absolutely stacked! So many amazing EP’s released this year. Jenova, Warpath, Animator as examples. This release gets the nod from me though! It’s Black metal, but loads more to it than most releases within the genre. Eternal Helcaraxe’s forthcoming album ‘In Times Of Desperation’ which we received yesterday and ‘The Great Miasma’ were the best Black metal releases of 2017 in my humble opinion.

The EP is a concept and really needs to be listened to as a body of work. We have it here in that format and I suggest you listen from start to finish. They really achieved their goal with this release and a massive improvement from their previous EP ‘As They Rot’. Which I also rated very highly.

I’m very much looking forward to their next release and what they do next. They keep improving so the next one could be up there with the all time classic Black metal releases from this small island of ours!

Burning Metal Awards 2017: Best Album – The Vicious Head Society – Abject Tomorrow

Album of the year. It’s probably every musicians dream. To see the fruit of their labour recognised by someone else and pay them the ultimate compliment for that particular year. Well, it would be if a big source presented you that award and more than ten people actually read it!

It’s a real bottom of the ladder award here, so at might at least make your Wednesday. Good job I didn’t release this at the weekend or it would be a complete afterthought for the winner!

This year we were treated to some great albums here in Ireland. Nautilus, Overoth, The Crawling, zhOra as examples all released phenomenally good albums so this had major competition!

Lets go back a bit to how this all came about. Graham Keane was a regular man, living his regular life and probably ironed his socks. A passionate musician and when his wife became seriously ill, which she has now recovered, he decided there’s got to more to life! Ironing socks just wasn’t cutting it now! He then decided to bring The Vicious Head Society to life. As a one man project working around guest players schedule, the finances involved  and a virtually unknown entity. It took a while! A few years in the end but after hearing the early tracks you knew this man was onto something with this album. We all hoped, well at least 20 people at the time that he would see this project through to the end.

The album was released earlier this year independently.  I was sent an advance copy before release to cover on our site and I was right all along about what the man was going to deliver. It absolutely blew me away! I couldn’t believe the level of musicianship and overall quality of this release. I gave the album 10/10 and declared it album of the year. My view has not changed! I couldn’t believe I was listening to an Irish project and would compare it to the best Prog releases of all time! It really is that good!

The Vicious Head Society are now signed to Hostile Media, so physical copies are available again! All sales go towards album number two.

This is not your every day story. An incredible album that may not have happened, but the hands of fate dictated Graham was going to leave a legacy on this planet other than ironing socks.

This album was untouchable this year as it’s an absolute masterpiece. Nothing came near it! A true timeless classic that will hopefully reach more people as time progresses. It deserves it…

Burning Metal Awards 2017: Best Video – zhOra – Infernal Liturgy

We now bring you our next award which like Best New Band, nobody gives a fuck about either! Again we’ll still do them in the hope at least one person may click on the link… It’s hard times in these the days of instant gratification where people don’t click links anymore unless it’s some nonsensical article. Maybe I should title all our stuff ‘Meteor Coming For Earth’ or the like? Actually, No! I won’t be doing that! Good job we don’t depend on this for financial reasons…

This one was on my mind over the past while on who to actually award it to. There were loads of great music videos and all were deserving in their own right. Then Clonmel based Progressive Sludge barbarians dropped their amazing video for  ‘Infernal Liturgy’ and made my life a lot easier.

The lads, and Colin in particular have a great artistic mind and it really shone through in this video. It’s D.I.Y at its finest here and a top job done by all involved.

It was also nice to see Ritchie in this video. For those unaware, he was the bands original Bassist that had to leave the band due to health issues.

A truly amazing video that proves you don’t need massive amounts of money to make a great music video. A creative mind and a get up and go attitude is all you truly need.

The lads have really taken off over the past couple of years and we hope this continues in 2018 and beyond!

Burning Metal Irl Awards 2017: Best New Band – God Alone.

It’s that time of the year again. Our awards that nobody gives a fuck about! We still do them though as certain bands do deserve that bit of extra praise each year. Unfortunately for them though it’s not Metal Injection etc. It’s us….

This was a tough one in some regards, but an easy choice in the end all things considered. We’ve been treated to some great new bands this year, but the majority of them are experienced musicians that have started a new band. Other bands may be new, but a lot older than these lads! They were probably not that good when they were the same age as these lads either.

God Alone. from Cork are all aged between 16/18 and describe themselves as post metal. I’d personally describe them as Progressive Black metal myself but how and ever. There’s about 5000 genres at this point. My view is, it’s good or it’s not! These lads are very good!

They’ve been gigging around Cork and already have a ‘Siege Of Limerick’ on their CV so they are impressing the right people within the Irish scene. Are they the finished article? Clearly not, but considering all and the kind of music they are play, it’s a massive step above 99% of musicians their age!

I’m very much looking forward to this bands progression and as winners of the ‘Best New Band’ award here at Burning Metal. An empty can of prawn cocktail pringles will be in the post in early 2018!

Congratulations lads! It’s all the way down from here….

Check out their debut EP ‘Intivim’ here!
