Review: Donum Dei – Contribute To Chaos

Review: Donum Dei – Contribute To Chaos

Belfast based Donum Dei who’s name name means ‘Gift From God’ in Latin were formed in November 2011 by brothers Thomas and Alastair Marshall. In 2014 they took it up a notch with their complete line up. Appearing in the Dublin based Metal To The Masses competition as an example. They were a very good band for their age at the time and showed signs of promise.

They then dropped their debut EP ‘Justice Fails’ in 2015. Which was heavily influenced by Metallica. It was a very good EP, but I just couldn’t get Metallica songs out of my head while listening to it. It had so many similar riffs etc. As a young band at the time I forgave them as they were still learning their trade and young bands generally wear their influences on their sleeve.

They released their lead single for this album ‘Murder and Mayhem’ on December 31st last year to wet the palates of the public. It actually knocked me back at the time! Who was this? Clearly it was Donum Dei, but I didn’t expect this! I had heard people from Belfast hyping them, but I had no idea they had made such a jump. Gone were the Metallica inspired songs and Hetfield style vocals. In their place, we had now and an excellent song that sounded like its own entity while Thomas spat out rasping vocals with death metal style growls in there. I was interested!

Now after listening to the full album I can say with all honesty, this band have came of age with this release. It’s just staggeringly good from start to finish. It’s still Thrash metal, but there’s other influences in there also that really add to the bands new direction. Like UK based Divine Chaos they have stuck to the Thrash formula but made slight adjustments here and there to keep it interesting.

Musically this band were always good, but they’ve really stepped it up on this release. They took all that they had and took it up to ten! A phenomenal improvement form their last release.

I’ve included their previously released  ‘Murder and Mayhem’ here for you to check out. If you like the sound of this? I’m fairly sure you will really like the album.

I’m also very much looking forward to checking them out live next month in Galway. This material is so strong and anyone I know that has listened to this in advance speaks very highly of it.

This is going to be on my best of Irish releases list next December. No doubt about it!!

Founded in 2011 in Vienna, Austria, Harakiri For The Sky has become widely known for their black metal meets post-rock style and unique mixture of melancholy and aggression, madness and meaning, all which are wrapped in alternately manic/mellow songs. The band was initially begun as a studio project by Bifröst member M. S. and vocalist/lyricist J. J., and has since expanded to a live lineup, which has gone on to perform with the likes of A Forest of Stars, Ellende, Fäulnis, Der Weg Einer Freiheit, and Agrypnie among others, encompassing over 20 countries to date.

Arson was recorded, mixed and mastered by Daniel Fellner and follows the band’s critically celebrated 2016 album III: Trauma. Their latest effort raises the intensity with massively epic tracks filled with anguish and rage and set to the tone of machine gun rhythm and crushing riffs.

Music Video Premiere: Cursed Sun – The Amygdala

Music Video Premiere: Cursed Sun – The Amygdala

We are very proud to exclusively bring you Cursed Sun’s final promotional video ‘The Amygdala’ from their critically acclaimed EP ‘The Amygdala’.

The video was filmed in a dream like state to both match the tone/mood of the song and they do so to great effect. It’s my personal favourite track from the EP so to see this amazing song come to life in this way is great!

The lads celebrated ten years as a band in 2017 and show no signs of slowing down in 2018. Four confirmed gigs as of now to include supporting Nu Metal titans Hed Pe tomorrow night.

I keep saying the scene up north is leading the way in Ireland. The fact they were unable to enter their heat of the Bloodstock Metal To The Masses due to their drummer suffering an injury didn’t cost them their shot. Bands and promoter James Loveday all worked in union to move things around to keep them in the competition at a later stage. This only emphasises my point about the unity in the northern metal scene! We have a lot to learn…

The band recently recruited Steve Martin on Bass. A heavily experienced player that is full of energy and enthusiasm so with his dynamic on stage, maybe this is their year to take it to the next level and a slot at Bloodstock?

For now, here’s The Amygdala! A truly fantastic song and a great way to conclude The Amygdala era.

We look forward to what comes next!

The Dali Thundering Concept Announce New Album ‘Savages’ To Be Released 13 April via Apathia Records Single ‘Ink’ Features Adam Warren of Oceano

French progressive metal quintet THE DALI THUNDERING CONCEPT have announced the release of their dystopian concept album Savages, out 13 April via Apathia Records.

The band have also unveiled new single ‘Ink’, featuring guest vocals from  Adam Warren (Oceano).

Savages is a dark projection of the future of humanity, should it not take drastic action to alter its course. What are the consequences of the global warming, the rise of right-wing populism and the politics of nostalgia, the growing rich-poor divide? According to THE DALI THUNDERING CONCEPT the future is very bleak.

Low-tuned riffs, crushing grooves and painfully abrasive vocals deliver this message with huge effect and urgency, however there is a glimmer of hope, illustrated by hints of electronica and even jazz. It’s an album of anger, suffering, despair and conflict, with many twists and turns; an impressive achievement for a band so young in their career.

THE DALI THUNDERING CONCEPT will be touring the UK and Europe far and wide in 2018, dates to be announced soon.
