Axecatcher Release New EP ‘Second Hand Grief’

Derry based Axecatcher have released their new EP ‘Second Hand Grief’.

Spanning three tracks Burner, Covered Eyes and Cry Foul it’s an excellent metallic hardcore EP from start to finish. This EP puts them up there with the best in the genre based in Ireland.

Easily one of my favorite Irish release so far this year. Hopefully this gets the notice it deserves.

DEVIN TOWNSEND – ‘EMPATH’ Out Now; Video For ‘Spirits Will Collide’ Launched

Canadian heavy music artist Devin Townsend releases his new album ‘EMPATH’ today, and to coincide with that, the epic video for ‘Spirits Will Collide’ has been launched. Watch the video here:

Devin comments: “Here is the video for my Enya influenced, ‘commercial’ song. I love this type of mid-tempo, big, romantic heavy music. I would love to do a full album in this style somewhere down the line, and it’s the only one of its kind on the Empath record.

‘Spirits Will Collide’ as a song is pretty standard fare for me if you’ve followed what I’ve done over the past few years. It’s ultimately an ‘anti-suicide’ statement and it’s meant to be melodic and straightforward. A video with CGI Gorillas playing bass and Elephants playing drums in front of a billion people is so ridiculously dumb that I’m surprised it makes me feel as happy as it does, but the theme of the song is essentially about trying to convince kids or teens to ‘hang on’ when they feel depression or suicidal thoughts. The story of the video is that a kid that has a fantasy about playing at a massive concert with thousands of people as a choir, animals etc…just the biggest concert he can imagine, and the strength of the sound and the intention of a bunch of people singing together is such that the sound blows away the darkness.

It’s admittedly a bit ridiculous, but I guess in a way I feel that beauty is much harder to be expressed quietly in this day and age, so the video is about saying it louder than ANYTHING. Without a multi-million dollar budget, it was hard to do. However, Kudos to iCode Team and the hundreds of extras for really pulling this out on a shoestring budget, I think it gets the point across. The only thing I would say that if I was a kid imagining playing the universes biggest concert, I would have added a full head of hair in there for good measure =)

‘EMPATH’ is available on Limited 2 CD Digipak in O-Card (including an entire disc of bonus material), Standard CD Jewelcase, Gatefold 180G 2LP Vinyl + CD + LP-booklet & as digital album.

In the lead up to the album’s release, Devin is walking fans through how Empath came together with a series of documentary episodes recorded as phone conversations during the course of the albums recording. Watch the first episode of that series here:

Over the past few years, the success that Devin has slowly worked for has fortunately come with the power to control his own creative destiny. The recent successes with the DVD from a sold-out Royal Albert hall, or his 2012 ‘Retinal Circus’, or last year’s ‘Ocean Machine’ live DVD with the Orchestra and Choir of State Opera Plovdiv has put him in a position where with the new album ‘EMPATH’, he will once and for all define himself as a musical force outside of any particular genre classification.

On this album Devin has decided to see what would happen if all the styles that make up his current interests were finally represented in one place. To finally shake the fear of expectation, and just do what it is he was meant to do creatively, EMPATH, true to the name, is about allowing the audience a feeling for a variety of musical emotions. The musical dynamics represented on this single album are broad, challenging, and immense. To approach this sort of work with a long history of what makes heavy music ‘heavy’, allows this to be done with a type of power rarely heard.

Joining Devin on this album is Frank Zappa alumni Mike Keneally as music director, as well as Morgan Ågren (Mats And Morgan, Frank Zappa, Fredrik Thordendal), Anup Sastry (Monuments, Periphery), Samus Paulicelli (Decrepit Birth, Abigail Williams), Nathan Navarro, Elliot Desagnes, Steve Vai, Chad Kroeger, Anneke Van Giersbergen, Ché Aimee Dorval, Ryan Dhale and the Elektra Women’s Choir.

A bold statement with massive production values and dynamic, uncompromised musicality. This is a statement about not only pursuing creative freedom in a conservative scene, but also trying to show that heavy music is truly a valid musical tool.

1. Castaway

ULCERATE: New Zealand Death Metal Trio Joins Debemur Morti Productions Roster. European Tour To Commence Next Month

New Zealand death metal trio ULCERATE have joined the Debemur Morti Productions roster.

Issues the band of the new union, “We are extremely happy to be moving head-first into this next chapter with a partnership that aligns so clearly with our own vision. Debemur Morti has always been in our peripheral gaze – the attention to detail and high level of curation is second-to-none.”

Death metal has always had roots in themes of humanity, darkness, and oppression, but when ULCERATE formed in Auckland, New Zealand in 2000, their unconventional approach to the genre quickly redefined the meaning of those concepts throughout death metal and beyond. The trio’s distinctive treatment of dynamics alongside in-depth lyrical content established the band as a formidable force long before they became the standard-bearers for a new era of death metal, one defined by meticulous passages of understated melodic sensibilities and jarring, tooth-scraping dissonance. The band’s inexorable march from 2007’s Of Fracture And Failure (2007) to the unparalleled Shrines Of Paralysis (2016) has been terrifying. And it appears the best is yet to come.

Further details on the band’s as-yet-untitled new full-length will be released in the months to come. In the meantime, don’t miss ULCERATE on their upcoming European tour set to commence April 10th and run through April 21st. The trek includes an appearance on this year’s edition of Roadburn.

Static-X: UK Wisconsin Death Trip 20th Anniversary Tour & Memorial Tribute To Wayne Static Announced

STATIC-X have announced the UK leg on their highly-anticipated ‘Wisconsin Death Trip 20th Anniversary’ tour this Autumn, which will also serve as a memorial tribute to late vocalist Wayne Static.

Featuring support from SOiLWednesday 13 and Dope, the tour kicks off in Bristol on 24th September and concludes in Birmingham on 4th October.

“Our intention is to pay ultimate respect to Wayne and to celebrate the music that has been in all of our hearts for more than 20 years,” says bassist Tony Campos“It’s all about channeling the vibe from 1999 to the best of our ability and playing those classic STATIC-X songs live and loud.”

“Rehearsals have been awesome,” adds guitarist Koichi Fukuda. “The music and the vocals are sounding really great! I feel like Wayne would be proud.”

“We understand that people are naturally going to want to know more about who is singing,” says drummer Ken Jay“We have discussed this at great length and we came to the conclusion that at this time, it would be inappropriate for us to put the focus on anyone other than WayneTony, Koichi and myself. It feels like the best way for us to celebrate Wayne’s legacy, along with the 20th anniversary of Wisconsin Death Trip, with all of our fans.”

In celebration of this announcement, STATIC-X have revealed an exclusive promotional video for the tour, including a never-before-seen clip of the band performing a newly-recorded version of their hit song “Push It”, featuring an unidentified vocalist. Check it out here:

Vircolac Release New Album ‘Masque’

Vircolac Release New Album ‘Masque’

https://www.facebook.com/vircolacdeathmetal/

After fiveyears of roaming city streets like a pack of rabid dogs, Vircolac is set to release its debut full length album titled Masque on Sepulchral Voice Records in Europe and Dark Descent Records in the US.

Following on from 2016’s The Cursed Travails of the Demeter EP, Masque celebrates a bolder edge mixing more visceral and vicious aural assaults with with a foreboding and obtrusive atmosphere throughout the 36 minutes of the recording.

The album title reflects the myriad masks we as human beings hide behind and the cover represents what is ultimately left once the mask of flesh is finally removed. Whether pauper or opulently venal, the end is the same for us all.

Thematically, the album reflects two different strands of story telling, with side A adopting a starkly defiant tone throughout. Side B then takes a moodier assessment of the obsequious venality that governs the world we inhabit and inherit. The conclusion of this being the mass industrialized slaughter of much of Europe’s young in the great war.

Masque is a direct statement of purpose by Vircolac and is the culmination of half a decade of steadfast belief in the continual relevance and importance of Death Metal.

While Death Metal appears to continually be a retrospective genre, Vircolac are intent on bringing fresh, vital and energised song writing to the fore, making the genre still contemporary and relevant.

This album is getting great reviews and they are more than deserved. An absolute masterpiece!
