DOWN REUNITE WITH CROWBAR’S KIRK WINDSTEIN FOR ‘NOLA’ 25TH ANNIVERSARY SHOWS

When New Orleans sludge supergroup Down announced their first shows of 2020 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the group’s debut album, NOLA, it was unclear if co-founding guitarist — and Crowbar mastermind — Kirk Windstein would be participating. He left Down in 2013 to focus on his main band (he also has his first-ever solo album, Dream in Motion, due in January), and was replaced by Honky guitarist Bobby Landgraf. Down vocalist Philip Anselmo has hinted at Windstein’s possible participation in recent interviews, but we didn’t have confirmation from the man himself until now. “I’m in, 100 percent,” Windstein told Revolver. “The quote from Pepper [Keenan, Down and Corrosion of Conformity guitarist] was, ‘If you ain’t doing it, I ain’t doing it.’ Phil, Pepper and Jimmy [Bower, Down drummer and Eyehategod guitarist] are my three of my oldest, closest friends, so this is a no-brainer for me.”

When asked if this means he’s back in Down for keeps, Windstein replies, “As far as I know, I’m back in the band. Bobby Landgraf did a fantastic job, and he’s a very good friend of mine. But once again, Down is back to what it started out as, which is a 100 percent complete side project. Everyone’s other bands are the priority and that’s that. But it’s been six and a half years since I jammed with those guys, so I’m excited. It’s gonna be fun.”

Our Favorite Irish EP’s of 2019

Our Favorite Irish EP’s of 2019

2019 was another top year for Irish metal. We’ve already dropped our favorite albums list and now for our EP’s. We didn’t call this list “Best” for a reason. We’re not saying they’re the best, just our personal favorites of the year. It’s all down to personal taste and end of the day!

Two Tales Of Woe – Bloodwood

Doom/sludge veterans Two Tales of Woe returned to their roots with Bloodwood and gave us an absolute whopper in the process. Easily one of the best EP’s released this year! A band I absolutely love…

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TwoTalesofWoe/

God Alone – God Alone

Our third year doing these lists/awards and God Alone have featured every year! Best young band, best album and now on the EP list.
This band are a national treasure basically and amazingly two of them just done their leaving cert this year. They’ve already featured in Kerrang and more and the future is very bright for them.
A scarily good band that just keep on getting better!

Grey Stag – The Boats

Progressive sludge trio Grey Stag released their second EP The Boats. Their previous EP ‘The Guide’ was our best EP last year so a pattern is emerging. Ake they’re still releasing excellent music and improving in the process!
One of my favorite bands out there at the moment and this EP is brilliant!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/greystagrocks/

Spirit Ruiner – Vol 1&2

Spirit Ruiner released two EP’s this year. Vol 1&2. I could decide which one I liked more, so added them both!
They combine sludge/death/doom metal and do a damned good job in the process! It’s dirty and horrible, but in the best possible way!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SpiritRuiner/

Withered Fist – This Is My Mountain

Justin Maloney (ex-Acrid Nebula, ex-Two Tales of Woe), Carl King (Two Tales of Woe) combined to create their EP This Is My Mountain which was dropped on new years day this year and set the bar for Irish releases for the year. It’s still one of the best almost a year later. Bloody brilliant EP!

Grave Sermon – Whitewashed Tomb

Grave Sermon are a band of experienced musicians that released their debut EP this year and gave us an excellent death metal release in the process. The marker has been set high for their future but I’m sure they will deliver!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GraveSermon/

Scorn Them – God Ends Here

Scorn Them released their excellent God Ends Here in the summer. Giving us a top class blackened death metal release in the process. A massively under rated rlease in regards to the Irish scene this year. They should be far better known!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/scornthem/

Cursed Sun – Vendetta

Cursed Sun are one of the longest running bands around and released possibly their most direct release this year in Vendetta. Their best? Possibly! I love it anyway…

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cursedsunmetal/

That’s our favorite EP’s this year. Many other released of course but these are our personal favorites anyway.
Congratulations lads! A can of empty Prawn Cocktail Pringles is in the post!
You can display it on your mantelpiece or fuck it in the bin…

Our Favorite Irish Albums Of 2019

Our Favorite Irish Albums Of 2019

We used to do a best album, ep etc here, but with so many great albums released within the Irish scene this year we went with a list instead. I couldn’t make up my mind is probably the truth on the matter, but I think they all deserve equal credit….

Arjuna’s Eye – Amalgam

Cork based Arjuna’s Eye were a band I was familiar with. I heard their previous material and thought it was a solid release. Then tracks started dropping for this album! I then knew that these lads really had something in the tank with this album and they did not disappoint!
If a gun were held to my head and had to pick one of these albums? It would probably be this one. I’ve listened to it numerous times and it’s always a great listen.
A band that should be a lot better known than they are…
An absolutely brilliant album!

Svet Kant – The Visage Unbiased

Svet Kant released their second album ‘The Visage Unbiased’ and like Arjuna’s Eye I appreciated their previous material but this knocked it out of the park!
This band most certainly do their own thing in regards to the Irish scene and this was easily one of the best and most interesting albums released this year.
One of my favorites of the year without question!
Great, great album.

Ketos – First Strike

Belfast based Ketos released their long awaited debut album ‘First Strike’ via Hostile Media.
This album is basically really enjoyable from start to finish. Great guitar work throughout and full of hooks. Every track is great and an album I’ll return to again and again.
One of the best this year without doubt!

Vircolac – Masque

Vircolac released their debut album ‘Mosque’ and it was excellent as expected!
It’s beautiful, horrible and grim in equal measure and easily the standout Death metal release this year in regards to Ireland.
A phenomenally good album!

Coroza – Chaliceburner

Cork based Coroza gave us an absolute whopper this year with Chaliceburner.
They fuse Doom, Sludge, 70’s fuzz aspects and created a brilliant album in the process.
Easily one of my favorites this year!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CorozaBand/

Oracle – Novissima

Belfast based Oracle showed serious potential with their earlier releases and delivered on all that promise with their album ‘Novissima’.
A brilliant album from start to finish and one that put them among the best up and coming bands on this island without doubt.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/oraclebandni/

Podracer – Maskenfreiheit

Podracer may potentially seem out of place here, but they’re not! This band rocks more many half their age could even dream of!
This is an album I’ve listened to numerous times and I always love every minute of it!
Like Kerbdog, they transcend genres and gave us an absolute blast with this album.

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/podracerband/

Wardomized – A Heated Exchange

Belfast based Wardomized released an absolute belter in A Heated Exchange.
It’s pure on grindcore and does it all in excellent fashion.
A brilliant album that I absolutely love!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wardomized/

Gravefields – Embrace The Void

Gravefields are a two piece studio death metal project. They released Embrace The Void this year to high praise from some big media sites and all deserved. A fantastic death metal album!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gravefields/

Lugosi – Rise From The Grave

Lugosi released their debut album Rise From The Grave and it’s absolutely brilliant! The lyrics are incredible. The music is great. It’s the total package basically!

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LugosiDub/

That’s our favorite Irish albums this year. Loads of great stuff released of course, but these are the ones I return to and always thoroughly enjoy.
Hence we didn’t call this piece the “best” as that’s always personal preference.
Congratulations lads! As a result of winning this amazing award a can of empty Prawn Cocktail Pringles is in the post!
You can place it on your mantelpiece or fuck it in the bin….

LUNE Drop New Single/Video Manipulator

LUNE Drop New Single/Video Manipulator

LUNE. Australia’s newest heavy phenoms return for a second hit of absolute brutality. A refreshing combination of soaring melodies with exceptionally heavy grooves, Melbourne, Australia’s Lune is comprised of members of Melbourne’s I, Valiance and Newcastle’s Blind Oracle. With only one song to date under their belt, they have made quite the impact immediately.

triple j’s Josh Merriel said of their first single Ghost, “This is so heavy that I am going to have to up my gains just so I can try and handle this track.” and triple j unearthed’s Dave Ruby Howe praised the track, saying “This is mental! Not surprising to hear that there’s some former members from I, Valiance in this cos it’s sick af.” Depth Mag’s Kel Burch posited that ““Ghost” serves as one hell of an introduction to LUNE. Eerie and raw, the urgency and panic is palpable from the start, as heavy riffs and slamming beats hit the message home along with a searing undercurrent.

Today they unleash their second single – MANIPULATOR. According to the band, Manipulator is “…about breaking away from an abusive family member. The song discusses recovering from experiencing domestic violence and escaping a damaging environment in order to heal. This escape comes with the realisation that family are sometimes the ones that hurt you the most and must be left behind in order to protect yourself. Manipulator is dedicated to anyone who has ever experienced or is recovering from any form of domestic violence.

The high-intensity track was produced by Jamie Marinos and mixed and mastered by Buster Douglas Odeholm at Impact Studios. The video for the track was shot by Nathaniel Smith and edited by Colin Jeffs at Ten of Swords Media, and was developed from a concept created by band member Nathaniel Smith .
