THE OBSESSED was formed in the late 1970s in Potomac, Maryland by legendary guitarist Scott “Wino” Weinrich (Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan). The band spawned in the realm of musicians/artists such as Black Sabbath, Frank Zappa, The Dictators, and The Stooges. The earliest lineup consisted of Wino, bassist Mark Laue, guitarist John Reese, and drummer Dave Flood. In 1983, Wino took over vocal duties and the band became a three-piece to record the Sodden Jackal EP.

The band broke up in the late ’80s after Wino moved to California to join Saint Vitus. At that time, a German label, Hellhound Records, and the booking agency that had signed Saint Vitus, released The Obsessed, originally recorded in 1985, prompting Wino to reform THE OBSESSED. After multiple lineup changes, the band signed to Columbia Records in 1994 to release their third and final album, The Church Within. Despite highly acclaimed reviews, THE OBSESSED would breakup following the release, seeing Wino forming Spirit Caravan (then Shine) and other projects.

In September 2011, THE OBSESSED returned to the stage at Roadburn Festival with The Church Within‘s legendary lineup (featuring Wino, Greg Rogers, and Guy Pinhas). The band played a few more reunion shows over the next couple years at Hellfest Open Air 2012 and Maryland Deathfest XI in May 2013 with bassist Reid Raley.

Wino announced the full-time return of THE OBSESSED in March 2016 and the band’s official signing to Relapse Records to record the follow up to The Church Within. The new lineup originally consisted of Spirit Caravan bassist Dave Sherman and Wino’s longtime friend and former road crew member. drummer Brian Costantino. On October 31st, 2016, Wino announced the lineup for THE OBSESSED, included bassist Bruce Falkinburg and guitarist Seraphim, making that the first time the band had been a four piece in over thirty-five years. Now in 2017, THE OBSESSED unleashes Sacred, the band’s first studio album in over two decades.

With renewed energy and purpose, THE OBSESSED sounds heavier and more relevant than ever before. On Sacred, the band doubles down on enormous, heaving riffs and pummeling low-end across twelve tracks of eternal doom. Rounded out Weinrich’s lyrical honesty and iconic throaty vocals, Sacred is an album that further pushes THE OBSESSED into the annals of heavy metal history, and well-worth the two-plus decade wait. The band will perform once again as a three-piece featuring Wino, Reid Raley, and Brian Costantino.

Irish Progressive Sludge Metallers ZHORA Announce Forthcoming Tour

Irish progressive sludge powerhouse zhOra have announced a forthcoming Irish tour in support of their new album Ethos, Pathos, Logos, which is released on October 27th. Check them out on one of the following dates:

October 20 – On The Rox, Dublin
October 21 – The Poor Relation, Cork
October 27 – Central Arts, Waterford
October 28 – Fozzys, Clonmel
October 29 – Siege of Limerick

Vocalist Colin Bolger comments on the forthcoming release tour: “We live and breath gigging! The stage is our place of solace and our battlefield. In the chaos of playing such visceral music live we thrive and can truly be ourselves. These days we can’t go running after people with swords and spears so we must instead fight with our hearts and minds. These upcoming launch shows for Ethos, Pathos, Logos will be our best live shows to date and we are honoured to share the stage with some of our closest friends in support. Éire…show me what you got!”

Check their recent single Riverchrist here:

Over the span of six years zhOra have quickly become one of the most recognisable names in the burgeoning Irish metal scene. In this time the band has released one EP Feet Nailed to the Ground (2011) and their debut LP Almaz (2013), both releases garnering huge praise within the scene. Now in 2017, the band is set to undertake the next stage in their journey, Ethos, Pathos, Logos.

In the only predictable aspect of the band’s sonic trajectory, Ethos, Pathos, Logos finds the band once again putting themselves under their own microscope and refining their approach. With a lush cover designed by acclaimed Visionary Artist Jake Kobrin, the record is zhOra’s first back-to-back concept album, an hour long journey through past lives and cannibalism.

Having played shows the length and breadth of the country and toured extensively through the UK, Germany, France, Belgium and Holland, the band is fiercely committed to their craft and putting their name on everyone’s radar.

No strangers to high profile slots, zhOra have supported and toured with bands such as The Ocean, Coilguns and Dictated among others. Earning a slot on the Headbanger Stage at Wacken Open Air 2016 was the culmination of this time together and the commitment to creating an unrelenting sonic fingerprint and fearsome stage show. Recently the band appeared at Bloodstock Open Air as winners of the Irish leg of the associated Metal to the Masses competition.

With plans to tour into 2018 in support of Ethos, Pathos, Logo, the band plans to kick those who would listen squarely in the throat, onto the path less travelled.

After all the hype and promotion surrounding the Bloodstock Metal 2 The Masses competition in Dublin over the past few months which saw zhOra victorious, you’d be forgiven for missing the relatively under-promoted Wacken Metal Battle Ireland, where once again, some of the best metal bands from around Ireland fight it out in Fibber Magee’s to win a slot at a major European metal festival. Wacken Open Air is a massive festival with around 80,000 attendees, most of whom buy their tickets even before the lineup is announced, so getting the chance to play there is sure to be an incalculable boost to any unsigned band’s career. Vying to be that band tonight are: Two Tales of Woe, Animator, The Devil Wants Her Swagger Back, Jailbirds, Xerosun and Jenova (in that order). It’s a varied lineup in terms of styles and experience, with the first two bands having already pounded the New Blood Stage at Bloodstock.

Two Tales of Woe get the night started with chugging riffs and crunchy sound that seem to really get the building crowd into the mood for heavy music. Next up, Wexford-based Animator return to competition in Fibbers sounding better than ever. Their now-familiar classic thrash riffs still reminds us of something Megadeth or Slayer would have been proud of in their earlier days. And Corey Taylor would most likely approve of The Devil Wants Her Swagger Back, who are third onstage and blow the audience away with more high octane brutality. Even a broken string doesn’t slow the momentum too much. Remember the name (if you can) because these hard working lads deserve a big break, and it must surely be coming soon. Dialling back the heaviness, Jailbirds deliver thirty minutes of Australian flavoured rock, not a million miles from the style of Airbourne who recently played at the Academy. A thoroughly enjoyable set, especially after a few tinnies, but maybe not the most obvious choice to represent Irish Metal at Wacken. Dublin-based Xerosun are the penultimate band of the night, and they get stronger each time they perform. With Martyna’s impressive vocal range adding the flavour to an already tasty foundation of rhythm and umpteen-string guitars, the crowd seem duly impressed. Gambling on a debut performance of a new track at the competition is a brave move, but unfortunately technical difficulties detract from what otherwise was a Wacken-worthy performance. Finally, Jenova wrap up the night with an explosive delivery of heaviness, spurring moshpits and even seeing vocalist Brian Harrington surfing the crowd.

A noticeable difference between this Wacken Metal Battle and the recent Bloodstock Metal 2 The Masses is the lack of an MC to introduce the bands or drum up enthusiasm from the audience, even though no drumming up was actually needed. Only once all six bands had performed, did the event organiser take to the stage to thank all involved and to announce the winner as judged by a panel of mystery metal mediators. The runner-up place is awarded to Jenova, who would take their place, should the winner be unable to travel to Germany in August. But Animator are crowned the well-deserved winners, and let’s be honest, are unlikely to miss the opportunity for any reason. Go on the lads!

Subsist Recruit New Vocalist

Subsist Recruit New Vocalist

Carlow based Subsist have revealed the identity of their new vocalist and getting ready to move onto bigger and better things! They released this statement on the matter.

So as alot of you guys may already know, a few months back we were forced to kick our old vocalist Daniel from the band due to personal reasons. But instead of calling it a day we decided to keep pushing, We have played one show since with help from our brother Patrick Scanlon from Heel Of Achilles which we are very grateful for.

With all that being said we needed a more permanent fixture to the band, So we would like to welcome Jimmy Rogers as our new vocalist, I have been personally friends with Jimmy for a good while now and he brings a really good positive attitude to the band and we are all alot happier with him.

This of course starts a new chapter for SUBSIST which we are all very excited about and cannot wait to get back playing, writing and most of all get back to the studio ♥

Our first show with Jimmy is Next Saturday the 17th supporting Antidotes w/ Minus Ten Thousand Hours and Sectile in Fibber Magees! Free entry so get down and show Jimmy a warm of a welcome as he deserves.
